Big News for First Home Buyers: Stamp Duty Scrapped on New Builds in Queensland

Starting May 1, 2025, the Queensland Government is removing stamp duty on new builds for first-home buyers. This change means thousands of dollars in potential savings for anyone entering the property market for the first time.

What’s Changing?

From May 1 onward, if you’re a first home buyer purchasing a newly built property, you won’t have to pay any stamp duty at all. The government has introduced a full concession, reducing the duty to zero.

This update only applies to new builds, so if you’re planning to buy an existing home, the rules are a little different. However, there are also changes for those too: the threshold for stamp duty on existing homes has been increased, and now only applies to properties valued over $700,000.

Who’s Eligible?

To benefit from the new stamp duty exemption, you must:

  • Be a first home buyer

  • Enter into a contract to buy or build a new home on or after May 1, 2025
